I think you'll find this site handy in answering your question because I had a similar one. Turns out that, if I can find it, I'll probably be buying an RB1 since it is DVD based and actually shows you the map of the area you are driving through. The RB4 does not display a map. Personally, I think the biggest feature of having a GPS (besides the voice navigation) is the ability to quickly check the map to see where your turn is and where you are in relation to everything else.Here's a side by side comparison too.
Just wanted to provide an update on the GPS radio discussion. I picked up an RB1 from EBay and couldn't be happier with it. The directions are spot on (granted, I live in Columbus, OH), the voice prompts are clear, and the screen provides great information.
The only downside is on a bright day it may be hard to see the screen. I haven't looked for brightness or contrast settings yet so that may be easy to compensate for.In any case, I love the radio and the fact that I can still use my steering wheel controls to manipulate the GPS and radio portions of the unit. The unit also has a trail marker feature so, from what I gathered from the instructions, you can store your favorite trails for recall at a later date or for directions on how to get there. Haven't tried this feature yet but that's because I just haven't had time yet.I would highly recommend checking out EBay for the unit if you are looking for one. If you pick one up retail it will run you about $1600 but I got mine on EBay for about $900 including shipping. Sorry for the late reply, I just joined last night.I've been looking at getting a Mopar navigation radio because I want my GPS in the dash for a clearn OEM look.Here's the down and dirty of what I have learned so far:RB1 is the premium system. Unit is manufactured by Alpine for Mopar.
Nav program and disks are by Navtech (also makes programs and disks for BMW).Pros: DVD based and shows a map, compatable with Serius.Cons: Map disks only cover 48 continental US states and part of Canada, no plans to cover more. Takes the G out of GPS. Since mapping program is proprietary, I'm being told that non-Navtech disks will NOT work. I'm stationed in Germany, lots of Jeep dealers around. The local dealer is verifying this for me. But it looks like the European Jeep navigation radio (RB3) does not display a map anyway, so not sure it will help.
